STGO Regulations

STGO Regulations

The Special Types General Order (STGO) regulations in the UK govern the movement of vehicles and loads that exceed standard legal limits for weight and dimensions. These regulations ensure the safe and efficient transport of abnormal loads on public roads.

Key Aspects of STGO Regulations:

Categories of STGO: STGO classifies vehicles into three categories based on their weight:

  • Category 1: Maximum gross weight up to 50,000 kg.
  • Category 2: Maximum gross weight up to 80,000 kg.
  • Category 3: Maximum gross weight up to 150,000 kg.

Each category has specific requirements and limitations regarding vehicle dimensions and axle weights.

Notification Requirements: Operators must notify relevant authorities before transporting abnormal loads:

  • Police Notification: Required for all STGO movements, with notice periods varying by category.
  • Highway and Bridge Authorities: Notification is necessary if the load exceeds certain weight or dimension thresholds to ensure infrastructure can accommodate the load.

Vehicle Markings and Escorts: Vehicles operating under STGO must display appropriate markings:

  • STGO Plates: Indicating the category of the vehicle.
  • Warning Signs and Lights: To alert other road users. Depending on the load’s size and weight, escort vehicles may be required to ensure safety during transit.

Speed Limits and Route Planning: STGO vehicles are subject to specific speed limits, generally lower than standard limits, to maintain safety. Operators must plan routes carefully, considering road widths, bridge capacities, and other infrastructure limitations.

Compliance and Penalties: Non-compliance with STGO regulations can result in significant penalties, including fines and restrictions on future movements. It’s crucial for operators to adhere strictly to all requirements to ensure safety and legal compliance.
