CPCS (Construction Plant Competence Scheme) Plant Operations is a comprehensive training and certification program designed to ensure operators are proficient in the safe and effective use of various types of machinery used in construction, industrial, and agricultural settings. It covers essential skills, safety protocols, and operational techniques.

CPCSPlant Operations includes training for a wide range of machinery such as cranes, concrete pumps, compressors, dump trucks, excavators, forklifts, telehandlers, hoists, loaders, shovels, rollers, mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs), piling rigs, and various other plant and machinery.

Eligibility requirements vary depending on the specific course. Generally, candidates should have basic literacy and numeracy skills. Some courses may require prior experience or related certifications. It is advisable to check the specific prerequisites for each course. In addition, candidates must pass an NOCN (or CITB) Health and Safety test (within 2 years of the course date) prior to attending a course. For Appointed Persons, a Managers and Professional Health and Safety test is required, for Crane/Lift Supervisor, a Managers and Professional Health and Safety test or a Supervisory Health and Safety test is required and for plant training, either an Operative Health and Safety test, a Supervisory Health and Safety test or a Managers Health and Safety test is required.

CPCS training combines theoretical instruction with practical hands-on training. It includes classroom-based learning for understanding safety protocols, regulations, and operational techniques, followed by practical sessions where participants operate the machinery under supervision.

The duration of CPCS courses varies depending on the type of machinery and the level of competency required. Courses can range from a few days to several weeks. Specific course durations are provided in the course details.

Assessments are conducted through a combination of a verbal theory test (written for Appointed Persons) and a practical test. Participants must demonstrate their knowledge and practical skills to pass the assessments.

Upon successful completion of a CPCS course, participants receive a CPCS Trained Operator Card, which serves as proof of their training in operating the specific type of machinery. This card is recognised industry-wide and is essential for employment in many construction and industrial roles.

The CPCS Trained Operator Card is valid for two years. After this period, operators must undergo an upgrade process, which includes the requirement for the relevant NVQ assessment to be completed to ensure they remain competent in their skills and knowledge.

The CPCS scheme provides several benefits, including enhanced employability, compliance with industry standards, improved safety on job sites, and recognition of competence in plant operations. It demonstrates a commitment to professional development and safety.

CPCS training emphasises safety protocols, risk assessments, and proper operational techniques. By ensuring operators are well-trained and knowledgeable, it reduces the risk of accidents and enhances overall safety on job sites.

No, CPCS training is now regulated for a number of the categories and therefore the specific scheme of works have been set by industry. At TUTS, we can offer bespoke training as an additional service.

Companies benefit from partnering with CPCS training providers by ensuring their workforce is competent, compliant with regulations, and capable of operating machinery safely and efficiently. This leads to improved productivity, reduced downtime, and a safer working environment.

There isn’t a refresher course, as such. To progress through the CPCS Scheme, you are required to undertake the relevant NVQ within 2 years of obtaining your CPCS Trained Operator Card.

To upgrade your CPCS Trained Operator Card (Red) you must complete the relevant NVQ. Successful candidates will then receive a CPCS Competent Operator Card valid for five years.

CPCS maintains high standards by using qualified trainers, comprehensive training materials, and rigorous assessment procedures. Continuous monitoring and updating of the training programs ensure they remain relevant and effective in meeting industry needs.
