On Friday, 19 April, we hosted a successful event titled “An Introduction to Construction” at our training facilities in Corby. This free event aimed to provide attendees with a comprehensive understanding of the different roles available in the construction industry, the required skill sets, and the pathways to enter the field.

The event was divided into two main sessions:

Morning Session (10:00 – 12:30):
Introduction to Construction – Talk

Attendees had the chance to hear from local key employers about the various roles available in the construction industry and the routes to enter the field. The session was highly interactive, with industry specialists answering a wide range of questions from the audience. This was a valuable opportunity for participants to gain insights directly from professionals who are actively involved in the sector.

Lunch Break (12:30 – 13:30):
Lunch & Relaxed Engagement with Employers

Participants enjoyed a relaxed lunch session where they could engage informally with employers, allowing for networking and more personal discussions about career opportunities and industry requirements.

Afternoon Session (13:30 – 16:00):
Practical Session – Operating Plant Machinery

The afternoon session provided a hands-on experience where attendees could operate plant machinery under the guidance of fully insured and competent instructors. Machines available for operation included a 14-tonne excavator, a forward tipping dumper, and a telescopic handler. This practical session was a highlight for many, offering a unique chance to get a feel for the machinery used in the construction industry.

About the Event

This event was designed for anyone interested in learning more about careers in construction. It was particularly beneficial for individuals transitioning from the Armed Forces, those curious about the physical roles in construction, and anyone looking to understand the necessary training and certifications required to work safely on construction sites.

Key Questions Addressed:

  • Age Requirement: Participants had to be at least 17 years old to operate the machinery.
  • Inclusivity: The event was open to all genders, encouraging a diverse group of attendees to explore the construction industry.
  • Participation in Practical Sessions: While participation in the practical session was encouraged, it was not mandatory. Those who preferred not to take part could still benefit from the informational sessions.
  • Available Machinery: The event featured a 14t excavator, a forward tipping dumper, and a telescopic handler for the practical session.
  • Industry Support: Local employers and awarding bodies such as the CITB were present to provide guidance and answer any questions about entering the industry.
