NVQ Overview
The L2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Construction) – Excavating is designed to confirm the competency of learners in the skills and knowledge required to operate excavating machinery safely and efficiently in construction environments. This includes the principles of excavation, machine operation, and health and safety practices.
Assessment and Certification:
This qualification is suitable for individuals working in the construction industry who operate excavating machinery as part of their role and are required to upgrade their Trained Operator cards or require an NVQ to confirm their competency.
Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive the L2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Construction) – Excavating, demonstrating their competence in operating excavating machinery in construction environments.
The qualification covers 2 mandatory units – Conforming to Health and Safety in the Workplace and Conforming to Productive Working Practices and 1 optional unit covering the operation of the machine in the workplace.
Participants must have experience of operating the machine, site experience and a basic understanding of construction principles.
Assessment is carried out through a portfolio of evidence, including observations, witness testimonies and work products. Participants will be assessed by qualified assessors to ensure they meet the required standards for certification.

The qualification covers various types of machinery used for excavating duties including Skid Steer Loader and Wheeled Loading Shovels. Participants will be required to provide confirmation of hands-on experience with these machines to confirm their understanding of the specific functions and operational techniques.
Participants will be required to confirm how relevant health and safety legislation and regulations govern excavating operations in construction. This includes understanding legal requirements for certification and licensing of excavating machinery operators.
Participants will be required to demonstrate techniques for safe and efficient excavation operations, including trenching, grading, and slope management and, in addition, an understanding of methods for avoiding underground utilities and dealing with different soil types.
Health and safety practices are integral to the qualification, covering risk assessment, hazard identification, and safe working procedures. Participants will explain the importance of personal protective equipment (PPE) and emergency response protocols specific to excavating operations.
The participant will be required to demonstrate routine maintenance checks and procedures for excavating machinery. This covers inspecting hydraulic systems, checking fluid levels, and ensuring the overall mechanical integrity of the equipment to maintain safety and reliability.
Participants will have an understanding of how to minimise environmental impact during excavation operations, including managing soil erosion, protecting natural habitats, and adhering to environmental regulations and best practices.
Competency is assessed through a portfolio of evidence that includes observations, witness testimonies, and work products. Participants must demonstrate their practical skills and theoretical knowledge in excavating operations to meet certification standards.
The qualification covers procedures for effective spoil management, including the proper handling, storage, and disposal of excavated materials. This ensures compliance with environmental and safety regulations.
Participants will explain and/or demonstrate emergency procedures for excavating operations, such as handling equipment malfunctions, responding to trench collapses, and executing evacuation plans. This includes protocols for immediate and effective emergency response.
Participants must have experience of operation of the machine, site experience and a basic understanding of construction principles and machinery operation. E
Upon successful completion, participants will receive the L2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Construction) – Excavating, demonstrating their competence in operating excavating machinery in construction environments.
The course duration is normally 1 day – as long as the site requirements are met and a room is available for the theoretical element of the assessment.
Our experienced assessors provide ongoing support throughout the qualification. Participants will receive guidance and feedback to help successfully complete the qualification.
The qualification includes criteria relating to site safety and preparation techniques, including the setup of excavation areas, ensuring ground stability, and the implementation of safety barriers and signage to protect both workers and the public.
