NVQ Overview
The L2 NVQ Diploma in Plant Operations (Construction) – Excavating Plant is designed to confirm the competency of learners in the skills and knowledge required to operate excavating plant safely and effectively in construction environments. This includes the principles of excavating, machine operation and health and safety practices.
Assessment and Certification:
This course is suitable for individuals working in the construction industry who operate excavating plant as part of their role and are required ti upgrade their Trained Operator cards or require an NVQ to confirm their competency.
Upon successful completion, participants will receive the L2 NVQ Diploma in Plant Operations (Construction) – Excavating Plant, demonstrating their competence in operating excavating plant in construction environments.
The qualification covers 2 mandatory units – Conforming to Health and Safety in the Workplace and Conforming to Productive Working Practices and 1 optional unit covering the operation of the machine in the workplace.
Participants must have experience of operation of the machine, site experience and a basic understanding of construction principles.
Assessment is carried out through a portfolio of evidence, including observations, witness testimonies, and work products. Participants will be assessed by qualified assessors to ensure they meet the required standards for certification.

The course covers a variety of excavating plant used in construction, including 180 and 360 excavators, Tracked Loading Shovels and Dozers. Participants have an understanding of the components, functions, and applications of these machines.
Participants will have knowledge of relevant health and safety legislation and regulations, including the Health and Safety at Work Act and PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations). This includes understanding the legal requirements for operating excavating plant, certification, and licensing.
Participants will have experience and understanding of techniques for safe and efficient excavation operations, including trenching, grading, slope management, dealing with different soil types and ensuring excavation stability.
Health and safety practices are integral to the assessment process, covering risk assessment, hazard identification, and safe working procedures. Participants will have an understanding of personal protective equipment (PPE), pre-operational checks, and emergency response protocols specific to excavating plant operations.
The assessment process includes routine maintenance checks and procedures for excavating plant. This covers inspecting hydraulic systems, checking fluid levels, and ensuring the overall mechanical integrity of the equipment to maintain safety and reliability.
Competency is assessed through a portfolio of evidence that includes observations, witness testimonies, and work products. Participants must demonstrate their practical skills and theoretical knowledge in operating excavating plant to meet certification standards.
Participants will have an understanding of emergency response procedures for excavating plant operations, such as handling equipment malfunctions, responding to trench collapses, executing evacuation plans and includes protocols for immediate and effective emergency response.
Participants must have experience of operation of the machine, together with construction site experience and should have an understanding of construction principles and machinery operation.
Upon successful completion, participants will receive the L2 NVQ Diploma in Plant Operations (Construction) – Excavating Plant, demonstrating their competence in operating excavating plant in construction environments.
The course duration is normally 1 day – as long as the site requirements are met and a room is available for the theoretical element of the assessment
