The qualification covers 2 mandatory units – Conforming to Health and Safety in the Workplace and Conforming to Productive Working Practices and 1 optional units covering the operation of the machine in the workplace.
Participants must have prior experience of operating the machine, site experience and a basic understanding of construction principles.
Assessment is carried out through a portfolio of evidence, including observations, witness testimonies, and work products. Participants will be assessed by qualified assessors to ensure they meet the required standards for certification.

The qualification covers a variety of extracting plant used in construction for extracting duties, including 180 Excavator, 360 Excavator, Dozers and Tracked Loading Shovels. Participants will have an understanding of the components, functions, and applications of these machines.
Participants will understand relevant health and safety legislation and regulations, such as the Health and Safety at Work Act and PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations). This includes understanding the legal requirements for operating extracting plant, certification, and licensing.
The qualification covers the precise operation and control of extracting plant, techniques for earthmoving, grading, and material handling, and safe use of extractor controls.
Health and safety practices are integral to the qualification, covering risk assessment, hazard identification, and safe working procedures. The course duration is normally 1 day – as long as the site requirements are met and a room is available for the theoretical element of the assessment
