Types of Respiratory Protective Equipment

  • Respirators (Filtering Devices): These devices filter contaminants from the air before it is inhaled. They include disposable masks (such as dust masks), half-face and full-face respirators with replaceable filters, and powered air-purifying respirators (PAPR) that use a battery-powered blower to pass air through filters.
  • Breathing Apparatus (BA): This type supplies the user with clean air from an independent source, like a compressed air cylinder. Examples include self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) commonly used in firefighting, and airline respirators connected to a remote air supply, ideal for confined spaces or environments with high contaminant concentrations.

Selection and Use of RPE

Choosing the correct RPE is vital to ensure it provides adequate protection. The selection depends on factors such as the type and concentration of contaminants, the nature of the work, and the specific working environment.

  • Fit Testing: Ensuring the RPE fits the wearer properly is critical for creating an effective seal. Fit testing is often a mandatory requirement and must be conducted regularly.
  • Training: Users need to be trained on the correct use, maintenance, and limitations of the RPE. This training includes instructions on when and how to use the equipment, how to inspect it for damage, and understanding its operational limitations.
  • Maintenance: Regular maintenance and inspection are necessary to keep RPE in good working condition. This includes checking for wear and tear, replacing filters as required, and ensuring the equipment is clean and ready for use.

Legal Requirements

In many countries, the use of RPE is regulated by specific laws requiring employers to assess risks and provide appropriate RPE when necessary. For example, in the UK, the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) regulations require RPE usage when exposure to hazardous substances cannot be adequately controlled through other means.
