NVQ Overview
The L2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Construction) – Cranes is designed to confirm the competency of learners in the skills and knowledge required to operator cranes safely and efficiently in construction environments. This includes the principles of crane operation techniques, and health and safety practices to ensure efficient lifting operations on construction sites.
Assessment and Certification:
This qualification is suitable for individuals working in the construction industry who operate cranes as part of their role and are required to upgrade their Trained Operator cards or require an NVQ to confirm their competency.
Upon successful completion of the qualification, participants will receive the L2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Construction) – Cranes, demonstrating their competence in operating cranes in construction environments.
The qualification covers 2 mandatory units – Conforming to Health and Safety in the Workplace and Conforming to Productive Working Practices and 1 optional unit covering the operation of the crane in the workplace.
Participants must have prior experience of operating the machine, site experience and a basic understanding of construction principles.
Assessment is carried out through a portfolio of evidence, including observations, witness testimonies and work products. Participants will be assessed by qualified assessors to ensure they meet the required standards for certification.

The course covers a variety of lifting machinery used in construction, including compact cranes, excavators when carrying out lifting operations, lorry loaders, hoists and overhead cranes. Participants will have hands-on experience with these types of lifting equipment to understand their specific functionalities and operational techniques.
Participants will be required to prove their understanding of relevant health and safety legislation and regulations governing lifting operations in construction. This includes understanding legal requirements for certification and licensing of machine operators.
Participants will demonstrate techniques for safe and efficient lifting operations, including load calculation, rigging procedures, managing load stability, handling various lifts and challenging site conditions.
Health and safety practices are a core part of the assessment process, covering risk assessment, hazard identification, lift plans and safe working procedures. Participants will have an understanding of personal protective equipment (PPE) and emergency response protocols specific to lifting operations.
The qualification includes knowledge on routine maintenance checks and procedures for lifting equipment. This covers inspecting lifting components, checking fluid levels, and ensuring the overall mechanical integrity of the lifting equipment to maintain safety and reliability.
Participants will have experience and an understanding of how to minimise environmental impact during lifting operations, including managing noise and emissions, protecting nearby structures, and adhering to environmental regulations and best practices.
Competency is assessed through a portfolio of evidence, including observations, witness testimonies, and work products. Participants must demonstrate their practical skills and theoretical knowledge in crane operations to meet certification standards.
The qualification includes emergency response procedures, such as handling equipment failures, responding to accidents, and executing evacuation plans. Participants will ne required to explain protocols for immediate and effective emergency response.
Participants must have experience of operation of the machine, site experience and a basic understanding of construction principles.
Upon successful completion, participants will receive the L2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Construction) – Cranes, and Specialised Lifting Plant, demonstrating their competence in operating lifting machinery in construction environments.
The course duration is normally 1 day – as long as the site requirements are met and a room is available for the theoretical element of the assessment.
Our experienced assessors provide ongoing support throughout the qualification. Participants will receive guidance and feedback to help successfully complete the qualification.
The qualification covers the setup and safety protocols for lifting operations, including site preparation, load securing, and communication with ground personnel. Participants will be able to demonstrate how to plan and execute lifts safely and efficiently.
