The L2 NVQ Diploma in Plant Operations (Construction) – Cranes and Specialist Lifting Plant is designed to confirm the competency of learners with the skills and knowledge required to operate cranes and specialist lifting plant safely and effectively in construction environments. This includes the principles of movement of loads, various types of cranes, specialist lifting equipment, and health and safety practices.
Assessment and Certification:
This qualification is suitable for individuals working in the construction industry who operate cranes or specialist lifting plant as part of their role and are required to upgrade their Trained Operator cards or require an NVQ to confirm their competency.
Upon successful completion, participants will receive the L2 NVQ Diploma in Plant Operations (Construction) – Cranes and Specialist Lifting Plant, demonstrating their competence in operating cranes or specialist lifting plant in construction environments.
The qualification covers 2 mandatory units – Conforming to Health and Safety in the Workplace and Conforming to Productive Working Practices and 1 optional unit covering the operation of the machine in the workplace.
Participants must have experience of operation of the crane or specialised lifting equipment and a basic understanding of construction principles.
Assessment is carried out through a portfolio of evidence, including observations, witness testimonies, and work products. Participants will be assessed by qualified assessors to ensure they meet the required standards for certification.

The qualification covers a range of cranes used in construction, mobile cranes, tower cranes and crawler cranes. Participants will have knowledge about the components, lifting capacities, and functionalities of these machines.
Participants will explain relevant health and safety legislation and regulations, including LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations) and PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations). This includes understanding the legal requirements for crane operation, certification, and licensing.
Participants will have experience of techniques for safe and efficient load handling and rigging. This includes the selection of appropriate lifting gear, rigging methods, load securing techniques, load assessment, weight distribution and centre of gravity considerations.
Health and safety practices are integral to the assessment process, covering risk assessment, hazard identification, and safe working procedures. Participants will have understanding of personal protective equipment (PPE) and emergency response protocols specific to crane and lifting operations.
The assessment process includes routine maintenance checks and inspection procedures for cranes and specialist lifting equipment. This covers pre-operational checks, identifying potential issues, and maintaining equipment to ensure safe and reliable operation.
Competency is assessed through a portfolio of evidence that includes observations, witness testimonies, and work products. Participants must demonstrate their practical skills and theoretical knowledge in crane and lifting operations to meet certification standards.
Participants will explain emergency response procedures for crane operations, such as handling equipment malfunctions, responding to load drops, and executing evacuation plans. This includes protocols for immediate and effective emergency response.
Participants must have experience of operation of the crane, site experience and a basic understanding of construction principles and machinery operation.
Upon successful completion, participants will receive the L2 NVQ Diploma in Plant Operations (Construction) – Cranes and Specialist Lifting Plant, demonstrating their competence in operating cranes and specialist lifting equipment in construction environments.
The course duration is normally 1 day – as long as the site requirements are met and a room is available for the theoretical element of the assessment
